President’s Corner by Diane Sardes

I sometimes forget the number of members we have who don’t run. You either cannot or you just don’t want to. We’re happy to have you because Checkers is a club of many interests. Although I myself focus most on running and racing, it is because that is where I am at this moment in time. Who knows where I will be later in life. I may still be a runner--I may not. It’s all dependent on what I am given. Not one of us knows what circumstances will turn our lives around for better or worse.

These thoughts lead me to remind you that injuries may incur in training. If you hear that someone has come down with an injury, whether it’s a nagging stress fracture or just a calf pull, do you forget about them until you see them up-and-around again. I have a much better idea. It's what we do when people are sick. Send them a card or call to leave a message if you can. As you know, athlete’s have a very hard time adapting to a regular lifestyle while recovering. We never know how long an injury will take to heal. There seems to be a withdrawal that athletes go through. Just ask some of our members - Jeanne Chiarmonte, Karen Reardon, Dana White, Mark Kucharski, Tom Donnelly, and Toby Mazur. Some of them are back running now. They don’t need to tell you how happy they are. You can see it in their faces.

There are many professionals in our club who can assist you through your training this season. Checkers has doctors, chiropractors, massage therapists.—you name it! It’s not a bad thing to see someone occasionally who can help you flush that lactic acid out and get the blood flowing gracefully back into your muscles. I wish you all a happy and INJURY FREE season! P.S. A special hello to our members who have or will be leaving the Buffalo area. We miss you at track.

75 Miles of Cross Training, Amy Fakterowitz

While most of my friends were lying on various beaches down south for our two weeks off from teaching, I decided to spend my time in a much different, slightly more strenuous sort of way. I hiked 75 miles of the Appalachian trail with my boyfriend Jeff Tracy who is in the process of hiking the entire trail from Springer Mountain, Georgia to Mt. Katahdin Maine (2,168 miles). Twenty-two years of running did not prepare me in the slightest for the physical challenge of this vacation. It will be a trip I will always remember. I met Jeff in Damascus, Virginia where we took a shuttle 75 miles north to Atkins, Virginia, and started our hike back to Damascus. (I learned that this is called a "flip flop" when someone who is hiking the trail in one direction does a section in the reverse direction). We walked anywhere from 8-15 miles each day with packs on our backs that contained our food, sleeping bag, and clothes. My pack weighed about 25 pounds at the start while Jeff's weighed over 40. We slept either in a tent or shelters that are all along the trail. I didn't get much sleep when in those shelters though. I had heard too many stories of mice scurrying about while hikers sleep. Those nights, I slept with one eye opened and my sleeping bag pulled over my head with Jeff laughing at me. The toughest part of the trip was overcoming being tired and hungry. At the end of the day I could barely move. With heavy hiking boots on my feet, the hot Virginia sun beating down, and miles of uphill, it was a mental challenge just to keep moving at times, but getting to see some of the sites that I did made every step worth it. We petted wild horses at the Grayson Highlands State Park, saw a B-1 bomber come barreling out from between 2 mountains without warning, watched a competitor get ready for his next leg of an adventure rac,e and saw some of the most beautiful scenery from Mt. Rogers which is Virginia's highest peak (5,729 feet). I met tons of interesting people from all walks of life, all with stories to tell. It also gave me a new-found appreciation for what Jeff and other hikers are accomplishing by setting out to hike the whole trail. My friends at work tease me that I don't know how to sit still, that I am too health,y and that I run too much, but they can tease all they want…anyone can lie on a beach for 2 weeks in the sun, but not everyone can do what I did. I would do it again in a second.

GETTING TO KNOW YOU by Paul Wandel

BIO

Dr Joe Antkoviak

Age Group: 65-69

Occupation: Retired; Former Chief Thoracic Surgeon at Roswell Park Cancer Institute.

Running: 6 Yrs.

Q. Dr Joe, How did you find Checkers Running Club?

A. I worked with Mary Roll (RN) at Roswell and she introduced me to the club. That was 6 Yrs. ago. Since then, I regularly attend all Track workouts.

Q. We all have our favorite running routes. What are yours?

A. I frequently run the trail system at Steiglemier Park in Cheektowaga. There is an abundance of wildlife. I see plenty of deer, ducks and turkey. I also run Saturday Mornings at 8AM at Chestnut Ridge.

Q. So what motivates you to be a Ridge Runner?

A. The hill work is very beneficial, and I really enjoy the scenery. One real outstanding benefit is the great social atmosphere.

Q. Both Dave and Bob Carroll teach us that goals are vitally important. Do you have specific goals?

A. Yes, I do have goals. The first is to stay in shape. Secondly, I plan to PR in the 5 KM with a sub 20. I also plan to run my second marathon. I would like to better the time I ran at Buffalo 1999 (3:54).

Q. Has your activity with Checkers been beneficial?

A. My experience with the club has been tremendous. The workouts are very structured. The coaches’ drills and speed workouts have been very helpful to me. My affiliation with the club has been the single most important factor in my running improvement. I am a stronger runner now.

Q. What events do you like to compete in best?

A. Long Runs, 10KM and up. I competed in the BPAC long distance Classic and finished 28 miles.

Q. You have won the Buffalo News Runner-of-the-Year Award in your age group for the past 2 years. Quite an accomplishment. How did you make it happen?

A. Well, Ed Whitlock rarely showed up at the races (Note: Ed Whitlock was elected this past year as the top rated Masters Runner in the world). But certainly a major factor is the discipline that the club provides.

Q. Dr Joe, I know your dad recently died at the age of 98. What helped to promote his longevity?

A. My dad did not lead a sedentary life. He was always very physically active. He worked and walked on the railroad. He never had any excesses in his life and enjoyed things in moderation.

Q. As a Medical Doctor, Please comment on the general health and fitness level of Americans at large. How do we rate and how can we improve?

A. Very poor! Too many Americans overeat and smoke and lead sedentary lives. We need to get more people running!

THE BUFFALO MILE RETURNS TO THE ERIE BASIN MARINA So here is what happened. When Race Director Tony Garrow sought a permit to use the Marina for the 2001 race, he was told that it was no longer being used for races. Apparently there were complaints made last year to the County Executive by boaters who were inconvenienced by our race. Tony then applied to the City, in January, for a permit to use Lincoln Parkway for the 2001 Buffalo Mile. He made similar application to the Buffalo Police Department, and he secured the appropriate insurance.

In early May, Tony received a call informing him that there was a problem. Seems that there is a parade going down Lincoln Parkway at the very same time that we were planning to use it. Parade organizers failed to request a special events permit, so no one knew of the conflict. It was only through the intervention of Deputy Park’s Commissioner, Jim Nowiki that the conflict was realized, and it was through his efforts that we were able to secure the Marina.

What we need to do this year, is to show all concerned—boaters and runners alike—that we can share the Marina in a way that is courteous to all, and shows the good spirit of Buffalonians and our desire to maintain our relationship with the City. Protection of runners will still be our first priority, but we also try to be as accommodating as possible to other users of the Marina. We ask for your cooperation and understanding.

SMILE WHEN YOU CROSS THE FINISH LINE This year’s Buffalo Mile is being taped by Adelphia for broadcast on Monday, June 11th on Adelphia Crossroads (6:30).
